Osteoporosis is a chronic bone metabolic disorder. As one ages, the osteoblastic function diminishes that slows down the repair process, which in turn causes more bone mass loss than formed, resulting in lower bone mineral density. The skeletal structure becomes fragile and is prone to fractures even with only slight collisions or falls.
Women are more prone to osteoporosis than men. Studies have shown that about one third of the women in Hong Kong suffer from osteoporosis. Women aged between 40 and 45 may experience rapid loss of bone mass due to early menopause, which increases the risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, menopausal women and elder men should undergo annual assessment of osteoporosis and bone densitometry (DEXA) for early diagnosis and treatment.
